  The JAA-PPL Theory

Part Time Class

When once you have tasted flight, you will forever walk the earth
with your eyes turned skyward,
for there you have been,
and there you will always long to return."
Leonardo da Vinci

The Private Pilot license (PPL) qualifies a person to act as pilot-in-command of an aircraft carrying passengers and baggage under visual fight rules (VFR) (in good weather conditions). If your interest in flying is limited to fun flying every now and then, the private pilot will meet your needs or else. However, if your goal is to become a Professional Pilot, you will need to proceed towards First Officer Training.

Pre - Entry Requirement

You can legally start flight training as young as sixteen, the minimum age for issue of the JAA PPL is seventeen years. Any student applying for the PPL must pass a "Class Two Medical". This medical check is carried out by JAA-DCA approved doctor and it ensures you are medically fit to fly. Wearing glasses is not usually a problem but it needs to be consulted with an Aviation Medical Examiner

Theoretical Knowledge and Exams

To successfully complete the theoretical course, you will have to sit and pass seven written examinations, which assess different areas of aeronautical knowledge. These exams are not difficult, but require a reasonable amount of studying. Whichever route suits you best, there is no getting away from the plain fact that you have to pass these exams by at least 80% - despite the official pass mark for each exam being only 75%

Part Time Studies

Whether you choose to attend Part-Time or Full Time to complete your Private Pilot ground school programme makes no difference at all. It consist of 155 hours of ground theory training that takes place at European Pilot Academy(EPA). Moreover, EPA students have consistently achieved excellent results in the JAA PPL ground examinations. First time pass rates are 96% for Part / Full-time ground school courses and at 87% for Self Study courses (These figures are based on results over the last twenty-four months).

The course is conducted by a JAA-DCA RTF Examiner who will guide the student pilot through the course material ensuring that all the relevant areas are covered in depth including practical advice on how to use the radio equipment on board the aeroplane.

The course has an emphasis on speaking, listening and understanding in all contexts in which radio communication occurs. The purpose of this course is to ensure that applicants for the license will communicate standard ICAO phraseology in plain English when operating inside and outside controlled airspace. At the end of the training the student pilot will conduct the written exam, and the practical test that may take up to 2-3 hours after completion of a number of practical training sessions with the RTF Examiner.
